| Caldas de Aregos
«Caldas» is a name of Latin origin that means warm, due to the warm waters that rose from local springs. Currently called «Termas» (Spa Village), where once existed the most ancient Portuguese spa village established by the first queen of Portugal, D. Mafalda, aiming at healing and protecting the pilgrims, as it was believed that those waters were miraculous. These waters are currently recommended for the treatment of skin, respiratory, rheumatic and skeletal muscle diseases. Caldas de Aregos is in full development with a hotel next to the quay and with excellent conditions for those looking for small charismatic villages with historical memory. As far as heritage is concerned, besides the beautiful 1700s manor houses belonging to the municipality where this parish is located, there is also the Church of Santa Maria de Cárquere connected to the image of the Count D. Henrique, who, according to the legend, had the convent and church built to express gratitude for the miracle (healing) as the 1st King of Portugal had been born with a deformity in the legs that did not allow him to walk. In the gastronomy besides the delicious cherries, the favourite ones are the sausages and the roasted kid cooked in a traditional without forgetting, within the sweets, the famous «cavacas» (sugar glazed cookies) from Resende. |
