Freixo de Espada-à-Cinta

Freixo de Espada-à-Cinta is rich in monuments, where the predominant style is the Manueline style among which stands out the «Torre do Galo» (Rooster Tower - heptagonal).

It is the birth place of the poet Guerra Junqueiro and of Jorge Álvares, the first sailor to reach Japanese land in the 16th century.

The Mother Church has several panels of the 1500s Portuguese painter Grão Vasco, the pillory, manor houses, statues, everything was well prepared to accompany the Douro River in Portugal and it has paid back the kindness by decorating the region with one of the most beautiful landscapes of its course until its mouth, full of low mountains and covered by almond trees that blossom during spring and according to history were many times the shade and rest of King D. Dinis.

As far as flavours are concerned there are cheeses, river fishes, game, sausages, squash and almond sweets accompanied by the strong and full-bodied wine of the region or by its Port Wine, are all flavours never to be forgotten.
